Meet My Bearded Dragon

Bearded dragons are one of the most popular pet reptiles because of their friendly personalities and relatively straightforward care requirements. My bearded dragon, Zeus, is an important part of my mini zoo and is always interesting to watch. Whether basking under the heat lamp, exploring the enclosure, or eagerly waiting for food, bearded dragons have a lot of personality.

Overview

Traits and Appearance

Bearded dragons are medium-sized lizards native to Australia. They are known for the spiky scales around their throat, which form their “beard.” When they feel threatened, excited, or are displaying dominance, they can puff out and darken this beard.
These reptiles are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They enjoy basking under heat and UVB lighting and often spend time observing their surroundings from elevated areas in their enclosure.

Personality

Bearded dragons are generally known for being calm, curious, and tolerant of handling. Many become comfortable interacting with their owners and may even seem to recognize regular routines such as feeding time. Mine certanity does as she will come running when she heards my voice and demands her food.

Each dragon has its own personality. Some enjoy exploring and climbing, while others prefer relaxing under their basking light. Their unique behaviors make them enjoyable pets for both beginners and experienced reptile keepers.

Responsible Sourcing

If you are interested in owning a bearded dragon, it is important to obtain one from a reputable breeder, rescue organization, or responsible source. Responsible breeders prioritize the health and well-being of their animals and can provide information about the dragon’s age, health history, and care requirements.
Adopting from a reptile rescue is another excellent option. Many healthy bearded dragons are looking for new homes, and adoption helps support responsible reptile ownership.

Special Care Considerations

My bearded dragon has some special care needs because her eyesight was affected due to past poor husbandry before she came into my care. Because of this, she requires a more carefully structured and consistent environment to help her feel safe and comfortable.
She does best when her enclosure layout stays familiar, since sudden changes can be confusing or stressful. Feeding time and handling also need to be done gently and predictably so she can safely interact with her surroundings. This experience has taught me how important proper husbandry is from the very beginning of an animal’s life, as it can have long-term effects on their health and well-being.
