Meet My Leopard Geckos

Leopard geckos are one of the most popular pet reptiles, and for good reason. They are relatively easy to care for, have unique spotted patterns, and come in many different colors and morphs. I have two leopard geckos, and each has its own personality and habits. My boy’s name is Rango, and at first, he didn’t like to be held. Now, he sometimes choices to come out. My girl’s name is Ivy, and she likes to come out of her tank when my boyfriend put his hand out to her.

Traits and Appearance

Leopard geckos are small, ground-dwelling reptiles native to dry regions of Asia. Unlike many other gecko species, they do not have sticky toe pads, so they cannot climb smooth walls. They are known for their spotted appearance, large eyes, and thick tails, which store fat reserves for energy.

One of the most interesting traits of leopard geckos is that they shed their skin regularly and often eat the shed afterward. They are also crepuscular, meaning they are most active during the early morning and evening hours.

Personality

Leopard geckos are generally calm and easygoing reptiles. While every gecko has its own personality, many become comfortable with gentle handling over time. Some are curious and active, while others prefer spending most of their time hiding and resting. This is true of my geckos as my girl, Ivy, likes to hide, but my boy, Rango, likes to be out an about.

My geckos, Rango and Ivy, enjoy exploring their enclosures, hunting insects, and finding their favorite hiding spots. Watching their unique behaviors is one of the most enjoyable parts of keeping them.

Responsible Sourcing

If you are interested in owning a leopard gecko, it is important to obtain one from a responsible breeder, rescue organization, or reputable reptile source. Avoid purchasing animals from sellers who cannot provide information about the gecko’s health and care history or from chain stores. Responsible sourcing helps support ethical breeding practices and ensures that animals are healthy and well cared for before entering a new home.
